Chemical Peel
A chemical peel is a procedure where a chemical solution is applied directly to the skin removing the top layers. When your skin grows back it is smoother. This procedure ranges from light to deep chemical peels, deep chemical peels take longer to recover from but have more dramatic results.
People often get chemical peels on their faces to reduce wrinkles, discolored skin, or scars. Chemical peels can be combined with other cosmetic procedures to enhance appearance.
Speak to a consultant at Avané clinic to discuss which type of chemical peel will be best for your skin type.
What Is A Chemical Peel, And What Does It Do?
A chemical peel is a solution made of chemicals that may help the skin’s appearance improve. It may be used to reduce wrinkling, blemishes, scarring, acne, and many other conditions. There are three different types of chemical peels, ranging from mild to strong. The chemical peel works by exfoliating the face and then ultimately peeling away over time.
What Does Each Chemical Peel Do?
The chemicals in the three different peels set one peel apart from another. The mild chemical peel uses alpha-hydroxy acid (AHA) to get through the first layer of your skin by gently exfoliating and improving your appearance. The moderate peel used a slightly stronger acid called trichloroacetic acid (TCA) to improve any discoloration and exfoliate into the middle layers of the skin. The strong peel uses Phenol to reduce wrinkles, moderate lines, freckles, and scarring. The skin will exfoliate over time and reveal new, improved skin.
What Is A Chemical Peel Treatment Like?
The treatment may start with the licensed aesthetician applying a barrier around certain areas, like the mouth and eyes. Your face will be so that the chemical will be able to better penetrate your skin. The peel will be applied all over the face, and you may feel a tingling sensation. The peel will sit while air is blown on your face to aid the peel’s drying process. After a certain amount of time has passed (which will vary from one patient to another), the peel will be washed away with water. After the peel is removed, the esthetician will inform you of the aftercare for your face.
What Are The Side Effects Of Applying Chemicals on My Face?
The side effects depend on which peel you decide is best for you. With the mild peel, you may experience redness or scale for anywhere from 1-7 days. With the moderate chemical peel, you may experience redness, swelling, and blisters may occur. With the strong peel, the treated area will need to be bandaged with possible eye swelling, a tingling or throbbing sensation, scabbing, and stinging. Skin color change, scarring, and cold sores may also occur.
What Can Prevent You From Being A Candidate For A Chemical Peel?
Chemical peels work best for those who are fair-skinned and or fair-haired. Those who are pregnant, nursing, have a skin condition (such as eczema or psoriasis), those who are taking isotretinoin (otherwise referred to as Accutane), or those who have used any skin lightening products within 48 hours of the treatment.
What Can I Expect After A Chemical Peel?
After a chemical, one may be able to expect reduced or erased wrinkles, freckles, scarring, and dark spots. In addition, you may see a more even skin tone. After the peel, you may find that your skin is sensitive to the sun. Your skin may need to be soaked, and the skin may be more tender to the touch than prior to the peel.
