Mole Mapping

Mole mapping is an important skin surveillance program designed for individuals who may be at higher risk of malignant melanoma. The procedure involves a thorough clinical skin examination and dermoscopy to identify and assess suspicious lesions. By carefully monitoring the skin, mole mapping helps detect new moles or changes in existing ones that may require further evaluation. Regular surveillance can support the early identification of melanoma, allowing for timely assessment and treatment when necessary. At Avané Clinic, mole mapping provides a structured approach to monitoring changes in the skin while supporting ongoing skin health through detailed examination and documentation of moles and other lesions.

How does mole mapping work?

Mole mapping involves a thorough skin examination using dermoscopy to capture detailed images of moles. Furthermore, this process helps in identifying new moles and monitoring changes in pre-existing ones. If any mole appears suspicious, it may be biopsied and examined histologically to confirm if it is cancerous.

What to expect during mole mapping?

During a mole mapping session, our dermatologist will carefully examine your skin and use a dermatoscope to capture detailed close-up images of your moles and other skin lesions. The examination is thorough and typically takes about an hour, depending on the number of moles being assessed. If a mole appears suspicious, the dermatologist will discuss whether a biopsy or further assessment is necessary. The images and findings from the session are documented and reviewed to create a detailed report. Your mole mapping report will then be compiled and sent to you within approximately 4–6 weeks after the session.

What are the results and benefits of mole mapping?

Mole mapping supports the early detection of melanoma and other skin cancers by identifying changes in moles over time. Regular monitoring makes it easier to recognise new or changing lesions that may require further assessment. Detecting suspicious changes early can support timely diagnosis and treatment, which is important for managing skin cancer effectively. Mole mapping can also help reduce the likelihood of melanoma progressing to an advanced stage and may minimise the extent of surgery required when treatment is necessary. By providing a detailed record of your moles, the process supports ongoing skin surveillance and helps you and your dermatologist monitor changes more effectively over time.
